Road transfers between hubs like San José, La Fortuna, and Manuel Antonio can take 3–4 hours with traffic and road conditions, so aim to pair these drives with only one or two light, nearby activities.

Local mom-and-pop eateries called sodas serve set plates (casados), breakfasts, and fresh juices at lower prices than tourist restaurants, and are usually very welcoming to families.
Book Popular Parks and Tours Ahead
Places such as Manuel Antonio National Park and some Arenal activities may require advance online reservations or have limited daily entries, especially in high season.
Pack for Sun, Rain, and Bugs
Bring lightweight long sleeves, long pants for forest walks, reef-safe sunscreen, and insect repellent; many of these are more expensive in Costa Rica than at home.[3]

Mornings are usually cooler and clearer, especially around volcanoes where clouds often build up later in the day.
