Mount Toubkal Trek

North Africa's highest peak adventure in Atlas Mountains

Standing at 4,167 meters, Mount Toubkal isn't just Morocco's highest peak—it's North Africa's crown jewel. This two-day trek through the High Atlas Mountains delivers serious altitude, Berber villages that time forgot, and views that stretch to the Sahara. But here's the thing: Toubkal isn't a casual weekend hike. You'll sleep in mountain refuges, navigate loose scree, and earn every meter of elevation. The reward? Summit sunrise over three countries and bragging rights to conquering Africa's second-highest mountain range. Most trekkers start from Imlil village, about 90 minutes south of Marrakech, where mule trains still carry supplies up ancient paths.

The standard Toubkal trek follows a two-day, one-night route that covers roughly 37 kilometers round-trip. Day one starts in Imlil village (1,740m) and climbs steadily through Armed village to the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m)—about 6-7 hours of hiking. You'll cross the Mizane Valley, pass terraced fields, and watch the landscape transform from green valleys to stark alpine terrain. Day two begins at 4:30 AM for the summit push. The final 960 meters of elevation gain takes 3-4 hours up a relentless scree slope. But that summit view—the Anti-Atlas, Middle Atlas, and on clear days, the Sahara—makes every step worth it. Descent back to Imlil takes another 4-5 hours. Some trekkers add a third day via the Azzaden Valley for a circular route, but the standard path remains the most reliable year-round.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Hire guides and mules directly from the Bureau des Guides in Imlil to avoid middleman markups
  • 2.Bring cash—the nearest ATM is 17km away in Asni village
  • 3.Pack your own snacks and water purification tablets to avoid refuge markup prices
  • 4.Stay in Imlil guesthouses before and after the trek instead of expensive Marrakech hotels
  • 5.Share guide and mule costs with other trekkers—the Bureau can arrange group bookings

Travel Tips

  • Start your summit bid by 4:30 AM to avoid afternoon weather and crowds

  • Pack extra batteries—cold temperatures drain them fast at altitude
  • Learn basic French or Arabic phrases—English isn't widely spoken above Imlil
  • Bring toilet paper and hand sanitizer—refuge facilities are basic
