Summer Palace

Imperial gardens showcase China's architectural and landscape mastery

The Summer Palace isn't just another tourist stop in Beijing. This is where China's last emperors escaped the heat and politics of the Forbidden City, creating what might be the world's most elaborate backyard. Spread across 700 acres around Kunming Lake, the palace complex showcases 800 years of Chinese garden design at its absolute peak. You'll walk the same marble pathways where Empress Dowager Cixi once held court, cross bridges that have reflected countless sunsets, and understand why this place has been called the "Garden of Gardens" for centuries.

The Summer Palace tells the story of imperial China's final chapter. Built in 1750 during the Qing Dynasty, it served as the royal family's retreat from Beijing's sweltering summers. But here's the thing – what you see today isn't the original. French and British forces destroyed most of it in 1860 during the Second Opium War. Empress Dowager Cixi rebuilt it in the 1880s, reportedly using funds meant for the Chinese navy. That decision probably cost China dearly in later conflicts, but it gave us this UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece. The palace represents the pinnacle of Chinese landscape garden art, where every rock, tree, and building placement follows ancient feng shui principles.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Buy the all-inclusive ticket for 60 yuan instead of basic entry – individual pavilion tickets add up to much more
  • 2.Bring your own food and drinks – palace restaurants charge tourist prices for mediocre quality
  • 3.Visit on weekdays when possible – weekend crowds mean longer lines and higher parking fees
  • 4.Use public transport instead of taxis – subway Line 4 is fast, cheap, and drops you at the gates
  • 5.Student discounts available with valid ID – saves 50% on admission
  • 6.Skip the audio guide rental and use the free official app instead

Travel Tips

  • Start at the north gate and work your way down to the lake – it's easier than climbing uphill
  • The Long Corridor is most photogenic in morning light when fewer tourists block the painted panels
  • Wear layers in spring and fall – Beijing weather changes quickly
  • Download offline maps – cell service can be spotty in some garden areas
  • The Marble Boat area gets very crowded after 10 AM – see it early
  • Kunming Lake freezes in winter, creating unique photo opportunities
  • Allow at least 4 hours for a proper visit – rushing through defeats the purpose
  • The 17-Arch Bridge is best photographed from the eastern shore of the lake
