Auschwitz-Birkenau operated from 1940 to 1945 as the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp complex. Over 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered here along with Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, and others deemed 'undesirable' by the Nazi regime. The complex consisted of three main camps: Auschwitz I (the main camp), Auschwitz II-Birkenau (the extermination camp), and Auschwitz III-Monowitz (a labor camp). Soviet forces liberated the camp on January 27, 1945, finding approximately 7,000 sick and dying prisoners. UNESCO designated the site a World Heritage Site in 1979, recognizing its universal significance as a symbol of the Holocaust and the cruelty humans can inflict upon one another. Today, the memorial serves as both a cemetery for the victims and an educational center dedicated to preserving historical truth.
