Chapman's Peak Drive

South Africa's most spectacular coastal mountain drive

Chapman's Peak Drive cuts a dramatic line between mountain and ocean along South Africa's Atlantic coast. This 9-kilometer stretch of road connects Hout Bay to Noordhoek through 114 curves carved into the clifftside. You'll climb 593 meters above crashing waves while navigating hairpin bends that photographers dream about. The drive takes 20 minutes if you don't stop. But you will stop. Every viewpoint demands it, and Chapman's Peak delivers some of the most spectacular coastal scenery on the continent. Just don't attempt it in thick fog or high winds - the road closes when conditions turn dangerous.

Chapman's Peak Drive officially starts at the Hout Bay end, where you'll pay the toll (around R45 for cars). The road immediately begins its climb up the western face of Chapman's Peak mountain. Your first major viewpoint comes at Curve 7, where most people pull over for their first photos of Hout Bay spread below. The road continues its serpentine path with numbered curves - locals refer to them by number, so Curve 44 is where you'll find the famous Chapman's Peak Hotel viewpoint. Around Curve 70, you reach the highest point at 593 meters. Here's where the Atlantic Ocean stretches endlessly west while Noordhoek Beach unfolds to the south. The descent toward Noordhoek offers different perspectives - Long Beach stretches for 8 kilometers, backed by the Noordhoek wetlands. End your drive at the Noordhoek Farm Village, perfect for a meal after all those curves.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Visit during weekdays to avoid weekend surcharges at nearby restaurants and attractions
  • 2.Pack your own snacks and drinks - viewpoint vendors charge premium prices
  • 3.Fill up with fuel before the drive - Hout Bay and Noordhoek stations cost more than city centers
  • 4.Buy a Cape Town City Pass if you're doing multiple attractions - includes discounts at nearby venues
  • 5.Time your drive to avoid peak hours (10am-2pm) when tour buses increase toll booth wait times
  • 6.Bring your own camera gear rather than buying disposables at tourist stops

Travel Tips

  • Download offline maps - cell coverage can be spotty along the clifftops
  • Keep your fuel tank above half full before starting the drive
  • Check wind conditions before departing - the road closes during strong southeaster winds
  • Allow 2-3 hours total if you plan to stop for photos and meals
  • Drive clockwise (Hout Bay to Noordhoek) for easier photo stops on the ocean side
  • Bring layers - temperature can vary significantly between sea level and the 593m peak
  • Keep your headlights on - it's required by law and improves visibility in shadows
  • Don't attempt the drive in rental cars with poor brakes - the steep descents are demanding
