Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from 1336 to 1565 CE. At its peak, this city housed over 500,000 people – making it larger than Paris at the time. Persian and European travelers wrote about markets selling diamonds and pearls, streets lined with rose water, and temples covered in gold. Then came 1565. The Battle of Talikota changed everything. A coalition of sultanates defeated the Vijayanagara forces, and the city was systematically destroyed over six months. What remains today is a fraction of what once stood, but it's enough to earn UNESCO World Heritage status in 1986.
