Hwange National Park stretches across 14,650 square kilometers of raw African wilderness, home to Zimbabwe's largest elephant population. More than 40,000 elephants roam these ancient hunting grounds, alongside lions, leopards, and over 400 bird species. Most visitors stick to the main roads around Nyamandlovu Platform and Main Camp, but that's where you'll find the tour bus crowds. Head to the northern areas near Robins Camp or Sinamatella for fewer vehicles and better wildlife encounters. The Mandavu Dam area delivers consistent elephant sightings, especially during afternoon drives. Early morning drives along the Deka Road often produce leopard sightings, though you'll need patience and a good guide. Self-drive safaris are allowed, but the roads can be rough – a 4WD is essential outside the main camp areas. Night drives aren't permitted for self-drivers, but organized night safaris from the lodges reveal a completely different side of Hwange.
