Jiufen Old Street

Mystical mountain town inspiring Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away

Step into the real-life inspiration for Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away. Jiufen Old Street clings to Taiwan's mountainside like a scene from an animated dream, where red lanterns glow through perpetual mist and narrow alleys wind past teahouses that haven't changed in decades. This former gold mining town turned cultural treasure draws visitors with its maze of traditional shops, incredible street food, and views that stretch across the northern Taiwan coastline. But here's the thing — Jiufen is more than just a pretty backdrop. It's a living piece of Taiwan's history, where you can still taste the island's mining heritage in every bite of taro ball and sip of oolong tea.

Jiufen's story starts in the 1890s when a prospector struck gold in these misty mountains. The town exploded overnight from nine families (jiufen literally means 'nine portions') to Taiwan's largest gold mining operation. Japanese colonial rulers expanded the mines, and by the 1940s, Jiufen was pulling serious wealth from the earth. Then the gold ran out. The town emptied faster than it had filled, leaving behind a ghost town of traditional architecture and mining tunnels. But in the 1980s, filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien shot 'A City of Sadness' here, and suddenly everyone wanted to see this atmospheric mountain village. Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki visited in the early 2000s, and the teahouse-lined streets became the visual inspiration for Spirited Away's spirit world. Now tourism keeps Jiufen alive, though locals still remember when you could hear pickaxes echoing through the valleys.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 3.Bus fare from Ruifang is 15 TWD, much cheaper than the 200 TWD taxi ride
  • 4.Many teahouses have minimum spend requirements of 150-250 TWD per person
  • 5.Street food is significantly cheaper than sit-down restaurants with views

Travel Tips

  • Visit on weekdays to avoid overwhelming tour group crowds
  • Arrive by 3 PM to explore before the evening rush and lantern lighting
  • Pack an umbrella — Jiufen gets rain 200+ days per year
  • Wear non-slip shoes for the steep, often wet stone steps
  • Try taro balls early in the day before popular stalls sell out
  • Use restaurant restrooms when possible — public facilities have long lines
  • Download offline maps — cell service can be spotty in the mountains

Frequently Asked Questions

Studio Ghibli has never officially confirmed Jiufen as the direct inspiration, but director Hayao Miyazaki visited Taiwan and the visual similarities are undeniable. The A-Mei Tea House looks remarkably like the bathhouse from the film, and the narrow lantern-lined streets match the movie's spirit world perfectly.
