Lake Tekapo
Turquoise waters beneath New Zealand's star-studded southern skies
Lake Tekapo sits in the Mackenzie Basin like a giant turquoise jewel, its milky waters reflecting snow-capped mountains under some of the clearest skies on Earth. This isn't your typical alpine lake – the water gets its otherworldly blue-green color from glacial flour, fine rock particles ground down by distant glaciers. And when night falls, you're looking up at one of the world's largest Dark Sky Reserves, where the Milky Way stretches across the horizon like scattered diamonds. But here's the thing about Tekapo: it's no longer the secret it once was. Instagram has done its work, and summer crowds can make the tiny town feel overwhelmed. Come prepared for that reality, but also know that stepping back from the main viewpoints reveals a landscape that still feels wild and endless.

Money-Saving Tips
- 1.Book accommodation well ahead for summer – prices double and availability vanishes by December
- 2.Fill up your car in Tekapo; petrol is 20 cents per liter cheaper than in Mount Cook Village
- 3.Pack your own food for day hikes – the Mount John Café charges $15 for a basic sandwich
- 4.Evening stargazing tours cost $185, but clear nights offer incredible free viewing from the Church of the Good Shepherd
- 5.Tekapo Springs hot pools are cheaper before 5pm ($27 vs $35 for evening sessions)
- 6.Buy groceries at New World in town rather than driving to Twizel – selection is better and prices similar
Travel Tips
- •Download offline maps – cell coverage can be spotty around the lake, especially on hiking trails
- •Bring sunglasses and sunscreen year-round – the alpine sun reflects intensely off the water
- •Check weather forecasts obsessively – Tekapo conditions can change from sunny to snowy in hours
- •Carry warm clothes even in summer – temperatures drop 15 degrees after sunset
- •Book stargazing tours at least 2 weeks ahead – they cancel if cloudy and fill up fast
- •Arrive at popular photo spots before 8am or after 6pm to avoid tour bus crowds
- •Keep your camera batteries warm in winter – cold drains them fast during long exposure shots
