Mount Kailash

Sacred peak revered by four major religions

Mount Kailash rises 6,638 meters from the Tibetan plateau like a perfect pyramid carved by gods. Four major religions — Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon — consider this peak sacred, drawing pilgrims who circle its base on the 52-kilometer kora. But this isn't your typical spiritual retreat. You're looking at three weeks minimum just to reach the mountain, Chinese permits that take months to secure, and altitude that'll knock you flat if you're not prepared. The reward? Walking the same path that's been sacred for over a thousand years, surrounded by some of the most remote and stunning landscape on Earth.

Darchen is your base camp — a dusty collection of guesthouses at 4,560 meters that serves as the starting point for the kora. The Gangdise Hotel offers the most reliable hot water and oxygen if you need it, though expect basic concrete rooms for around $30 per night. Pilgrims often stay at the Darchen Guesthouse for half that price, but the shared bathrooms are grim. For the actual kora, you'll sleep at Drirapuk Monastery on night one — stone rooms with yak-dung stoves and views of Kailash's north face that'll make you forget the thin mattress. Night two is Zutulpuk Monastery, equally basic but spiritually charged. Book everything through your tour operator since independent bookings aren't possible.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Budget $3,000-5,000 minimum for a 15-day tour including permits, transport, and accommodation
  • 2.Chinese permits cost around $200 but must be arranged through licensed tour operators
  • 3.Bring US dollars in small bills — Chinese yuan isn't widely accepted in remote areas
  • 4.Factor in altitude sickness medication and possible emergency helicopter evacuation insurance
  • 5.Tip your Tibetan guide and driver well — they're risking permits by taking you to sensitive areas
  • 6.Stock up on snacks and supplies in Lhasa where prices are reasonable before heading to Kailash

Travel Tips

  • Start altitude acclimatization at least a week before attempting the kora circuit
  • Pack for extreme temperature swings — scorching sun during the day, freezing nights
  • Bring a good sleeping bag rated to -10°C minimum for monastery stays
  • Download offline maps since internet and GPS are unreliable in the region
  • Respect local customs — always walk clockwise around the mountain and religious sites
  • Carry cash for everything — credit cards don't work and ATMs don't exist
  • Pack extra batteries and power banks — electricity is sporadic outside Darchen
