Pacific Rim National Park

Wild Pacific shores meet ancient temperate rainforests

Pacific Rim National Park stretches along Vancouver Island's rugged west coast, where thousand-year-old cedars meet crashing Pacific waves. This isn't your typical beach vacation. Here, you'll find 16-kilometer stretches of wild sand at Long Beach, temperate rainforests thick with moss-draped giants, and some of the most challenging coastal hikes in Canada. The park splits into three sections: Long Beach (the accessible one), the Broken Group Islands (kayaker's paradise), and the West Coast Trail (75 kilometers of pure masochism). Most visitors stick to Long Beach and the nearby rainforest trails around Tofino. Smart move — you can experience the park's essence without needing a helicopter rescue.

Long Beach offers the gentlest introduction with flat beach walks and the 2.5-kilometer Rainforest Trail. Two sections here: Trail A takes 20 minutes through old-growth forest, while Trail B adds another 15 minutes through a bog ecosystem. The Wickaninnish Trail (2.4 kilometers) connects the visitor center to Chesterman Beach with ocean views the whole way. For serious hikers, the West Coast Trail demands 5-7 days, advanced booking, and genuine wilderness skills. You'll cross suspension bridges, navigate muddy sections with ropes, and camp on remote beaches. The Broken Group Islands require sea kayaking experience — these 100+ islands offer multi-day paddling adventures but no hiking trails. Closest thing to easy here is the Half Moon Bay trail (1 kilometer) near Ucluelet.
