Copper Canyon

Mexico's Grand Canyon with indigenous culture and train adventures

Forget the Grand Canyon for a minute. Mexico's Copper Canyon system stretches four times larger, carved deep into the Sierra Madre mountains where the Tarahumara people have lived for centuries. This isn't your typical tourist trail. You'll ride one of the world's most scenic train routes, sleep in canyon-rim lodges, and hike trails that drop thousands of feet into green river valleys. The Chepe train winds through 37 bridges and 86 tunnels, connecting mountain towns where time moves differently. Here's what you need to know about exploring Barranca del Cobre.

Six major canyons make up what we call Copper Canyon, though locals know it as Barranca del Cobre. The deepest canyon, Barranca de Urique, plunges 6,165 feet - deeper than the Grand Canyon. But here's what makes it different: this isn't desert. Pine forests cover the rim at 8,000 feet, while tropical vegetation grows in the canyon floors. The copper-green oxidation on canyon walls gives the region its name. The entire system covers 25,000 square miles across Chihuahua state, with the Continental Divide running right through it. Most visitors see just a slice along the train route, but that slice includes some of Mexico's most dramatic landscapes.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Book train tickets online in advance - walk-up prices can be 30% higher than advance purchase
  • 2.Stay in Creel rather than rim hotels to cut accommodation costs by half while still accessing canyon views
  • 3.Pack snacks and water for train rides - onboard food is overpriced and limited
  • 4.Negotiate with Tarahumara vendors at viewpoints - initial prices are often inflated for tourists
  • 5.Consider the economic class train ticket if you're on a tight budget - views are nearly identical
  • 6.Eat at local fondas in towns rather than hotel restaurants to save 40-50% on meals
  • 7.Buy crafts directly from Tarahumara families rather than souvenir shops for better prices and authenticity

Travel Tips

  • Bring layers - temperature swings from rim to canyon floor can be 40°F or more
  • Download offline maps before traveling - cell service is spotty throughout the region
  • Learn basic Spanish phrases - English speakers are rare outside tourist hotels
  • Pack altitude sickness medication if you're sensitive - rim elevations reach 8,000 feet
  • Bring cash - ATMs are scarce and many businesses don't accept cards
  • Book accommodations in advance, especially October through March when weather is ideal
  • Respect Tarahumara photography preferences - always ask permission before taking photos of people
  • Pack sturdy hiking boots - trails can be rocky and steep with loose surfaces
  • Carry water purification tablets or stick to bottled water in remote areas

Frequently Asked Questions

Plan at least 3-4 days to see the main highlights. This gives you time for the train journey, one or two canyon viewpoints, and a short hike. A week allows for deeper exploration including visits to multiple towns and longer hiking trails.
