Pinnacles Desert

Alien landscape of ancient limestone pillars

Two hours north of Perth, thousands of ancient limestone pillars rise from golden sand like something from another planet. The Pinnacles Desert looks like Mars, but it's very much on Earth - in Nambung National Park, where these geological formations have been sculpting themselves for 30,000 years. Some towers reach four meters high, others barely peek above the sand. Walk between them on the Discovery Centre Trail, or drive the scenic loop if your feet aren't up for it. The contrast is stark: yellow sand, blue sky, and these weathered sentinels standing guard. Come at sunrise or sunset when the light turns everything amber, and you'll understand why photographers make the pilgrimage here.

The Discovery Centre Trail is your main walking option - a 1.2km loop that takes about 30 minutes at a leisurely pace. It's mostly flat with wooden boardwalks and sand paths, suitable for most fitness levels. But here's the thing: sand walking is harder than it looks, especially in summer heat. The trail winds between the tallest pinnacles, with interpretive signs explaining how wind and rain carved these formations over millennia. For those who prefer wheels over walking, the 4km Pinnacles Drive lets you see the formations from your car. It's a one-way loop on unsealed road - any regular car can handle it, but take it slow around the corners. The drive has several parking spots where you can hop out for photos without committing to the full walk.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Pack a full picnic lunch instead of eating in Cervantes - the town's dining options are limited and pricey
  • 2.Buy your park entry pass online in advance during peak season to avoid queues at the self-serve machines
  • 3.Fill up with fuel in Cervantes or Jurien Bay - there's no petrol station at the Pinnacles
  • 4.Bring a reusable water bottle and fill up at the Discovery Centre to avoid buying expensive bottled water
  • 5.Consider camping at the national park ($8 per person) instead of Cervantes accommodation to save $80+ per night
  • 6.Visit on weekdays when some Cervantes accommodations offer lower rates than weekend prices

Travel Tips

  • Download offline maps before you go - cell coverage is patchy throughout Nambung National Park
  • Check the weather forecast and pack layers - desert temperatures swing wildly between day and night
  • Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise for the best photography light without crowds
  • Bring a small brush to clean sand off your camera lens - the fine particles get everywhere
  • Wear closed shoes with good ankle support - the limestone can be sharp and uneven
  • Time your visit with the wildflower season (August-September) for the most dramatic scenery
  • Book Cervantes accommodation well in advance during school holidays and wildflower season
  • Combine your visit with nearby attractions like Lake Thetis stromatolites to maximize the drive from Perth
