Richelieu Rock

Thailand's premier underwater pinnacle for marine encounters

Richelieu Rock sits 18 kilometers east of the Surin Islands like a submerged mountain peak, rising from 60-meter depths to just one meter below the surface. This limestone pinnacle draws some of Thailand's most spectacular marine life — whale sharks cruise the blue water, manta rays glide overhead, and schools of barracuda swirl in silver tornadoes. But here's the thing: you can't just show up. Richelieu Rock requires planning, proper dive certification, and a liveaboard trip from Khao Lak or Phuket. The journey takes commitment, but when you're floating 18 meters down watching a 12-meter whale shark emerge from the blue, you'll understand why this remote dive site tops every serious diver's bucket list.

You can't stay at Richelieu Rock — it's literally just an underwater pinnacle in the middle of the Andaman Sea. Your base will be either Khao Lak or Phuket, depending on which liveaboard operator you choose. Khao Lak sits closer to the Similan Islands and offers better value accommodation. Try Sarojin Resort if you want luxury, or Nangthong Bay Resort for mid-range comfort with dive shop connections. Phuket gives you more nightlife and restaurant options but adds travel time to reach Richelieu Rock. Most serious divers pick Khao Lak and book a 4-day liveaboard that hits Richelieu Rock on day two or three. The town has plenty of dive shops along Phetkasem Road — just make sure they're PADI certified and have recent Richelieu Rock experience.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Book liveaboards directly with operators in Khao Lak to avoid Bangkok agency markups — save 2,000-4,000 baht per trip
  • 2.Bring your own mask and fins to avoid daily rental fees of 200 baht per item on the boat
  • 3.Pack reef-safe sunscreen and seasickness medication — buying these on liveaboards costs triple the pharmacy price
  • 4.Choose 4-day trips over 3-day ones — the extra day only costs 20% more but includes 6 additional dives
  • 5.Book during shoulder season (November or April) for 30% lower liveaboard prices compared to peak December-February rates

Travel Tips

  • Get Advanced Open Water certification before booking — Richelieu Rock's strong currents require confident diving skills
  • Bring a reef hook for drift diving — the current can sweep you away from the pinnacle in seconds
  • Pack a 3mm wetsuit even in warm water — you'll do 16+ dives over 4 days and get cold
  • Download offline maps and dive site info — internet connection disappears once you leave shore
  • Book liveaboards 2-3 months ahead during peak season — the best operators sell out quickly
  • Bring extra camera batteries and memory cards — you can't buy them in the middle of the ocean
  • Pack seasickness medication even if you don't usually get sick — the crossing to Richelieu Rock can get rough

Frequently Asked Questions

You need Advanced Open Water certification minimum. The strong currents and depth (up to 35 meters) make this unsuitable for new divers. Most operators require 30+ logged dives and recent diving experience.
