Robben Island
Nelson Mandela's prison turned powerful symbol of freedom
The ferry cuts through Table Bay's choppy waters, carrying you toward a small island that changed the world. Robben Island looks unremarkable from Cape Town's waterfront — just a flat patch of land seven kilometers offshore. But this is where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 prison years, where political prisoners broke limestone in quarries, and where the foundations of modern South Africa were quietly laid in whispered conversations between cells.

Robben Island has been many things over four centuries — a seal colony, a leper colony, a mental hospital, a military base. But history remembers it as South Africa's Alcatraz, the place where the apartheid government sent its most dangerous political prisoners. Mandela arrived here in 1964, prisoner number 46664. He'd spend the next 18 years in a cramped cell, sleeping on a straw mat, doing hard labor in the limestone quarry. But here's what makes this place extraordinary: the prisoners turned their jail into a university. They taught each other languages, debated politics, and planned for a democratic South Africa. The quarry where they worked became known as 'Robben Island University.' Former prisoner Ahmed Kathrada called it 'the greatest university of resistance.' Today, UNESCO recognizes it as a World Heritage Site — not just for its buildings, but for what it represents about human dignity under oppression.
Money-Saving Tips
- 1.Ferry tickets cost around R400 for adults, R200 for children — book directly through the official Robben Island Museum website to avoid markup
- 2.Parking at V&A Waterfront runs R20 per hour, but the MyCiTi bus to the ferry terminal costs just R15
- 3.Pack snacks and water — the island's small café is expensive and has limited options
- 4.Audio guides cost extra, but many visitors say the live guides (often former prisoners) are worth skipping the audio for
- 5.Combine your visit with free attractions at V&A Waterfront like the Amphitheatre performances to maximize your waterfront time
Travel Tips
- •Book ferry tickets 2-3 weeks in advance, especially for weekend visits during summer months
- •Check weather conditions the morning of your visit — rough seas mean cancelled ferries
- •Bring a warm jacket even on sunny days — Table Bay winds can be brutal on the ferry
- •Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip — the island paths can be uneven and slippery
- •Arrive 30 minutes early for check-in, but don't arrive too early as there's limited seating in the terminal
- •Photography is prohibited inside the Maximum Security Prison cells — respect this rule
- •Listen carefully to your guide's stories — many are former political prisoners sharing personal experiences
- •Visit the small museum shop on the island for books and souvenirs you won't find elsewhere
