The Romantic Road isn't just Germany's most famous scenic route — it's a 350-kilometer journey through everything you imagined medieval Europe would look like. Half-timbered houses lean into cobblestone squares. Castle towers pierce morning mist. And yes, you'll drive past the actual castle that inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty.

But here's what the guidebooks don't tell you: this route gets packed in summer, especially around Neuschwanstein. The trick is timing your stops and knowing which towns actually deserve your time versus which ones are tourist traps with inflated prices.

The road runs from Würzburg in the north to Füssen in the south, winding through Bavaria's most photogenic landscapes. You'll pass through 29 towns and cities, though realistically you'll want to focus on maybe six or seven unless you have weeks to spare. The Romantic Road divides into three distinct sections, each with its own personality. The northern stretch from Würzburg to Rothenburg covers wine country and the Tauber Valley. Here you'll find Würzburg's Residenz palace and the fortress town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber — probably the most Instagram-famous stop on the entire route. The middle section runs from Rothenburg to Augsburg through the Swabian countryside. This is where crowds thin out a bit, and you'll hit gems like Dinkelsbühl (Rothenburg's quieter cousin) and the walled city of Nördlingen, built inside an ancient meteor crater. The southern finale from Augsburg to Füssen delivers the Alpine drama everyone came for. Neuschwanstein Castle sits here, along with the Wieskirche pilgrimage church and the dramatic peaks around Füssen. This section gets the most traffic, especially the castle area. Most people drive the route, but you can also take the Romantic Road bus that runs from April to October. It stops at major towns but limits your flexibility. A car gives you freedom to explore side valleys and skip the tour bus crowds.
