Lost City Trek

Southern charm flows through moss-draped marshlands and historic cities

Four days into Colombia's Sierra Nevada mountains, and you'll reach a place that makes Machu Picchu look like yesterday's news. Ciudad Perdida — the Lost City — sits on ancient stone terraces that the Teyuna people built 650 years before the Incas even started construction in Peru. But here's the thing: getting there isn't easy. This isn't a day hike with tour buses. You'll cross rivers 50 times, sleep in hammocks, and earn every single one of those 1,200 stone steps leading to the terraces. The jungle doesn't hand over its secrets lightly.

The Lost City Trek covers 44 kilometers over four days, starting from the village of El Mamey near Santa Marta. Day one takes you 8 kilometers through coffee farms and into dense jungle to Aluna camp — your legs will feel it on those first steep climbs. Day two pushes 13 kilometers to Teyuna camp, crossing the Buritaca River multiple times. Your boots will stay wet. Day three is the payoff: a 4am wake-up call for the final push to Ciudad Perdida. Those 1,200 stone steps carved into the mountainside lead to terraces that span 30 hectares. You'll spend two hours exploring before heading back to Paraiso camp. Day four retraces your steps to El Mamey — 16 kilometers that feel longer because your knees are shot. Look, this isn't a loop trail. You're hiking the same path twice, but somehow it looks completely different on the way back.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Book directly with permitted operators (Turcol, G Adventures, Expotur, Magic Tour) to avoid markup from third-party agencies
  • 2.Pack your own snacks and water purification tablets — camp shops charge tourist prices for basic supplies
  • 3.Bring cash for the 15,000 COP indigenous community entrance fee and any drinks at camps
  • 4.Skip expensive gear rentals in Santa Marta — buy what you need at local outdoor shops for half the price
  • 5.Plan an extra recovery day in Santa Marta instead of flying out immediately — your body will thank you

Travel Tips

  • Break in your hiking boots at least two weeks before the trek — blisters will ruin your experience
  • Pack extra socks and underwear in a dry bag — everything else will stay damp for four days
  • Learn basic Spanish phrases — your indigenous guides speak limited English but appreciate the effort
  • Bring biodegradable soap for river bathing and respect the no-shampoo rule in water sources
  • Download offline maps to your phone before leaving Santa Marta — cell service disappears after El Mamey
  • Pack light but bring a small gift for your guides — they work incredibly hard for modest pay
  • Start taking anti-malarial medication if recommended by your doctor — the Sierra Nevada has risk areas

Frequently Asked Questions

It's more challenging than the Inca Trail but less technical than Kilimanjaro. The constant humidity, river crossings, and muddy terrain make it tougher than elevation suggests. You need good fitness but not mountaineering experience.
