Tayrona National Park

Colombia's Caribbean coast paradise of pristine beaches and jungle

Tayrona National Park sits where Colombia's Sierra Nevada mountains crash into the Caribbean Sea. You'll find golden beaches backed by dense jungle, howler monkeys waking you at dawn, and trails that make your legs burn in the best way possible. But here's the thing — this isn't your typical beach vacation. You're hiking 45 minutes just to reach Cabo San Juan, the park's most famous beach, and there's no WiFi once you're in. The park closes every February for maintenance, so plan accordingly. Most visitors underestimate how challenging the terrain can be, especially in the heat.

The main trail from El Zaino entrance to Cabo San Juan covers 9 kilometers and takes most people 2-3 hours. It's not technically difficult, but the humidity will get you. The path alternates between beach walking and jungle sections — wear good shoes because some rocky areas will punish flip-flops. Arrecifes sits at the 7-kilometer mark and makes a good stopping point if Cabo San Juan feels too ambitious. For day hikers, the Cañaveral to Arrecifes section offers the best beach-to-effort ratio. The Pueblito trail branches off toward ancient Teyuna ruins, but that's a serious 4-hour round trip climb that most people skip. Look, if you're not used to tropical heat, start early. Really early. The 6 AM crowd has the right idea.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Book park entry permits online in advance to avoid disappointment - they limit daily visitors
  • 2.Bring cash in small bills - no ATMs or card readers inside the park
  • 3.Pack your own food and plenty of water - park vendors charge premium prices
  • 4.Stay in Santa Marta instead of beachfront hotels to save 50-70% on accommodation
  • 5.Take the collective transport from Santa Marta (15,000 COP) instead of private taxis (80,000+ COP)
  • 6.Visit during shoulder season (March-April) for lower accommodation rates and fewer crowds

Travel Tips

  • Start your hike before 8 AM to avoid the worst heat and afternoon crowds
  • Download offline maps before entering - cell service is spotty to nonexistent
  • Wear closed-toe shoes with good grip - flip-flops are a recipe for twisted ankles
  • Bring a waterproof bag for your electronics - afternoon rains come suddenly
  • Pack insect repellent - mosquitoes and sand flies are relentless in jungle sections
  • Respect the no-swimming zones - rip currents have claimed lives at several beaches
  • Book camping permits months in advance if you want to stay overnight at Cabo San Juan
  • Carry out all trash - the park has a strict leave-no-trace policy
