Wild Coast
South Africa's untamed coastline of rolling hills and culture
The Wild Coast isn't trying to be anything other than what it is — raw, unpolished, and completely authentic. This 300-kilometer stretch of South Africa's Eastern Cape coastline runs from East London to Port Edward, where rolling green hills crash into the Indian Ocean and Xhosa communities have lived for centuries. You won't find luxury resorts or manicured beaches here. Instead, you'll sleep in traditional rondavels, eat fresh crayfish bought directly from fishermen, and hike to waterfalls that most tourists never see. The roads are rough, the infrastructure basic, but that's exactly the point. This is South Africa before the tour buses arrived.

Money-Saving Tips
- 1.Budget R800-1200 per day including accommodation, meals, and transport - most guesthouses include all meals
- 2.Bring cash - ATMs are scarce and card machines often don't work in remote areas
- 3.Negotiate crayfish prices directly with fishermen on the beach - expect R50-80 each in Coffee Bay
- 4.Book accommodation in advance during South African school holidays (December-January) when prices double
- 5.Pack snacks and drinks for long drives - shops are few and far between on coastal roads
Travel Tips
- •Pack layers - coastal weather changes dramatically from day to night even in summer
- •Bring a headlamp and backup batteries - power outages are common in rural areas
- •Download offline maps before you go - cell service is patchy along most of the coast
- •Respect local customs when visiting Xhosa villages - ask permission before taking photos
- •Hire local guides for hiking - trails aren't marked and it's easy to get lost in the rolling hills
