These striped sandstone formations in Gansu Province create one of China's most photographed landscapes — and for good reason. The red, orange, and yellow bands carved by millions of years of erosion stretch across 510 square kilometers of protected parkland. But here's the thing: those Instagram shots don't capture the scale. Standing on Platform 4 at sunset, watching shadows dance across layers that tell Earth's geological story, feels like being on another planet. The colors shift throughout the day, so plan to stay a while.

Zhangye Danxia sits in the Hexi Corridor, about 40 kilometers southwest of Zhangye city in Gansu Province. The geological park covers two main areas: Linze Danxia (the more famous Rainbow Mountains) and Binggou Danxia (known for dramatic red cliff formations). The colorful stripes formed over 24 million years as different mineral deposits created distinct layers — iron oxide for the reds, sandstone for the yellows. The park sits at 1,500 meters elevation, so pack layers even in summer. Five numbered viewing platforms offer different perspectives, with Platform 4 being the money shot for sunset photos.
