Why It Matters
One of the first museum-hotel hybrids in the US, founded by contemporary art collectors Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson. The Cincinnati outpost opened in 2012 in a beautifully adaptive reuse of the century-old Metropole Hotel. Every surface is curated, from site-specific installations by named artists to the iconic Cracking Art Group penguin mascot. The galleries are free to the public around the clock — a genuinely unusual amenity.
21c Cincinnati is a working contemporary art museum that also happens to have 156 hotel rooms. It occupies the historic 1912 Metropole Hotel building on Walnut Street, right across from the Aronoff Center for the Arts and next door to the Contemporary Arts Center. The art is everywhere — corridors, elevator cabs, stairwells — and the galleries are open free to the public 24/7. Look for the yellow penguin; he moves around.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The galleries are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, free to everyone — guests and non-guests alike. Rotating exhibitions and permanent site-specific installations throughout the hotel. Current exhibition: Fragile Figures: Beings and Time. Notable permanent works include Wolfe's Field of Grass on the stairway wall and Uros light sculpture by Grimanesa Amorós in the lobby corridor. The elevator cabs are themselves artworks by Anne Peabody.
21c hosts rotating public events in the gallery spaces — openings, artist talks, and community programming that bring the art to life after hours. Check the What's On page before your stay.
24/7 fitness center on the lower level, accessible with room keycard. Equipped with cardiovascular machines, circuit strength training equipment, and free weights. Complimentary for all hotel guests. Note: one recent guest flagged limited air circulation — may feel warm during peak use.
