48° Nord
Nordic-Alsatian minimalism. Raw wood, clean lines, huge windows. Slow living and digital detox by design — no screens in the hyttes. Feels more like a Scandinavian forest retreat than a French country hotel.
Book a Fjell hytte if budget allows — the private sauna and Nordic bath overlooking the valley are the whole point of the place
Why It Matters
One of very few Nordic-style landscape hotels in France. Architect Reiulf Ramstad — known for his Norwegian mountain paths — designed the hyttes to sit lightly on a classified Natura 2000 site. The NYD restaurant holds a Michelin Green Star for sustainable gastronomy. The 2,000 sqm organic garden feeds the kitchen. Opened July 2020; won the 2025 Hotel & Lodge Award in the Architecture category.
A Franco-Danish concept born from a landscape architect's obsession with Scandinavian hyttes, 48° Nord sits above the Alsatian village of Breitenbach on a Natura 2000 protected site. Fourteen bare-wood cabins, designed by Norwegian architect Reiulf Ramstad, climb a hillside through the treetops — no TVs, no cars on-site, no noise beyond birdsong and valley winds. The restaurant NYD holds a Michelin Green Star and sources almost everything within 150 km, with wines pulled from within a 48 km radius. It's a place built around the Danish concept of hygge, and it commits to that idea seriously.
