Historic Guesthouse
Minimalist-historic boutique. Less-is-more philosophy applied to a medieval skeleton. Old bones, very clean interiors. Not loud.
Book direct — the hotel's own site explicitly states 'Booking direct is worth it' and may offer better rates
Why It Matters
The oldest documented building in Brixen (city land register #1) with a hospitality history stretching back to 1500. Won the Big See Architecture Award 2024 and was named Top-Newcomer 2024 for the bergmeisterwolf renovation. Attached to Finsterwirt, one of the Eisacktal/Valle Isarco valley's best-known restaurants since 1870. A rooftop heated pool directly overlooking Brixen's cathedral skyline is rare for a city hotel of this size.
A 500-year-old building — land registry number 1 of Brixen — that has been a hostelry since the 1500s and hosted the likes of Emperor Maximilian I and Michel de Montaigne. Current owners Christoph Mayr (6th generation) and Silvana Messner handed it over to local architecture duo bergmeisterwolf in 2023 for a full renovation. The result is 43 rooms where centuries of vaulted ceilings and stone floors do the talking, and the design stays out of the way: no period costuming, just natural materials, smoky earthy tones, and box-spring beds. Up on the roof, a heated outdoor pool looks straight at the cathedral bell towers.
