Al Moudira Hotel
Maximalist orientalist palace meets grand country house. Think patterned tiles, domed ceilings, coloured glass, canopy beds, and bougainvillaea-draped courtyards — all built new, but with a studied sense of antiquity. Unhurried, deeply atmospheric, and very quiet.

Why It Matters
A Relais & Châteaux member and one of the very few genuinely special hotels in Upper Egypt. Every one of its 54 suites is individually designed. The kitchen sources almost entirely from its own 10-acre organic farm. The library holds over 7,000 books on Egyptian and Middle Eastern history. And it has a 37-metre early-20th-century dahabiya moored nearby for private Nile charters.
Al Moudira translates literally as 'the boss' — a fitting name for the most commanding property on Luxor's West Bank. Created by Franco-Lebanese designer Zeina Aboukheir in 1999, the hotel is built in traditional Arabesque style around 10 private courtyards, filled with antique furnishings she sourced from across the Middle East, hand-painted frescoes, and materials salvaged from vanishing historic buildings. Surrounded by 10 hectares of palm groves, organic gardens, and a working farm, it sits far from the east bank tourist crush — closer, as it happens, to where most guests actually want to be: the Valley of the Kings.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Private candlelit dinners can be arranged virtually anywhere on the property — in the gardens, by the pool, in a courtyard. A popular request for honeymoons and special occasions.
Watch the sun set over the Nile from the deck of a traditional felucca. The hotel team can arrange this through local operators.
The hotel's own 37-metre dahabiya — a traditional Nile sailing boat and one of the very few early-20th-century boats still in service. Fully crewed, five luxury cabins, available for private charter on short or extended cruises. Bespoke itineraries available via egyptbeyond.com.
The hotel can arrange hot air balloon rides over the West Bank monuments — one of the classic Luxor experiences at sunrise.
A carefully assembled collection of over 7,000 books across two villas, covering Egyptian and Middle Eastern archaeology, history, art, politics, and literature — including Naguib Mahfouz novels and first-edition Baedeker guides for Egypt and the Middle East.
The concierge team can arrange private early-morning visits to Karnak Temple to catch the sunrise — before the crowds arrive.
The concierge team arranges visits to local craftspeople and artisans in the surrounding West Bank villages — part of the hotel's commitment to connecting guests with authentic local life.
Large main pool set in a palm grove, big enough to swim laps and with a small shallow section suitable for children. Six additional villa pools, occasionally opened to non-villa guests.
A fleet of 11 vehicles includes three SUVs, three minivans, a 1967–68 stretch Mercedes 200, two 1980s Land Rover Defenders, and a 1960 Karmann Ghia. Available for airport transfers, monument touring, and desert excursions. Contact concierge@moudira.com.
The hotel's 10-acre organic farm supplies the kitchen. Guests can tour the property — including the animals (ostrich, cattle, goats, poultry) — and visit a papyrus workshop, pottery, and basket-making. A genuine farm-to-table operation aiming for 80% self-sufficiency.
