Albergo Al Sole
Aristocratic Italian intimacy — antique wooden furniture, frescoed grottos, period-correct ceramics — but run with real warmth by two sisters who are genuinely always around. It's the kind of place where the history is tangible but never stuffy.
Book Room 202 if you want the Eleonora Duse experience — it's been restored to match her era and the hotel keeps her original reservation letters.
Why It Matters
A genuinely historic building with a storied past (Eleonora Duse, Gabriele D'Annunzio connections), owned and operated by the De Checchi family since 1996. Member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and listed on both Tablet Hotels and the Michelin Guide. One of only a handful of 5-star properties in the Prosecco Hills UNESCO area.
A 16th-century villa on a steep, narrow street in the medieval hilltop town of Asolo. Sisters Silvia and Elena De Checchi have run the place since 1996, when they restored it from a 25-year abandonment. The 23-room property sits right on Asolo's main square and looks out over the Prosecco hills, with antique hand-carved wood in every room and traditional patterned tile work in the bathrooms. Room 202 is dedicated to Eleonora Duse, who actually stayed here in the 1920s — the hotel still has her handwritten reservation letters.
