Alpenloge is a nine-room design boutique hotel built on the footprint of a 1930s village schoolhouse in western Allgäu, Bavaria. Owners Anja Schott-Engelke and Michael Schott spent five years sourcing the furnishings — Schramm beds, Nor11 and Fredericia chairs, Berker 1930s-collection light switches, Nicolazzi fittings — before opening. The building reads like a traditional shingled Bavarian chalet from the outside, but inside it's clean-lined contemporary interiors with natural timber, concrete accents, and floor-heated bathrooms. The nine rooms are called 'Logen' and named by compass direction; sit at the junction of Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Austria; and the in-house restaurant with chef Mark Beastall is the kind of quietly extraordinary cooking that draws repeat guests back on its own.

Top-floor room with French balconies (windows that convert to full balconies with one slide) overlooking the Austrian Alps to the south-east. 52 m² of purist design: matured timber wall behind the bed, lambskin elephant chairs, felt cushions in stone design. At 57 m², this is the hotel's largest room. White-dominated palette with structural timber and canvas accents, textural sheep and goat furnishings, and a working fireplace for romantic evenings. The property's most compact room at 33 m², but the north-east orientation gives it an idyllic view over the village and the red onion-domed church tower. E-mountain bike hire for rides in the surrounding Allgäu landscape, including routes up to the Hirschberg. The hotel also has e-bike/pedelec charging points on site.
Direct access to trails from the hotel across the Allgäu alpine meadows. The Hirschberg summit (over 1,000m) is accessible as a day hike. The hotel can provide trail maps via Outdooractive. Guided herbalist walks also available on request.
The famous Bregenz Festspiele (opera and performing arts festival on Lake Constance) is just 20 minutes by car. The hotel can recommend ticket arrangements.
Chef Mark Beastall hosts private cooking classes for groups of up to four guests. Sessions are themed around the season and available produce — Lake Constance fish, local veal from Scheffau farms, kitchen garden vegetables. Hands-on and personal.
A local herbalist can be called upon to guide guests through the herb-rich alpine meadows surrounding the hotel.
In summer, barbecues are held on the hotel's grassy outdoor terraces. Open to all hotel guests.
The surrounding Allgäu hills offer cross-country skiing, snowshoe hiking, and alpine skiing within a short drive. The Luggi-Leitner Ski Lift is around 4.5km from the hotel. In the evenings, guests gather around the lounge fireplace with mulled wine.
