A Victorian townhouse tucked down a quiet dead-end off St. James's Street, this place was a proper gentlemen's club before it was a hotel. Founded in 1857, Winston Churchill, Ian Fleming, and Henry James all passed through as members. The Althoff Collection (German luxury group) took over and polished it to a five-star finish without losing the club-like hush. There are 60 rooms and suites — none massive, but all meticulously furnished — and the art alone is worth noting: over 400 pieces in the Rosenstein Collection, spanning Impressionist, Expressionist, and Cubist works. The Penthouse gets its own private lift and a 170m² floor.
