Amanfayun
Contemplative and deeply rooted in place. This is old China — understated, monastic in spirit, built around silence, tea, and ceremony. The aesthetic is neutral tones, dark timber, carved wood, calligraphy, stone floors. No flashy design moves. Just genuine heritage, immaculately maintained.

Why It Matters
Opened in spring 2010 as the second Aman property in China, Amanfayun is one of the few luxury hotels in the world that genuinely occupies a centuries-old working village rather than merely evoking one. You can walk out your courtyard gate and reach a 1,700-year-old Buddhist temple. The property's TCM-informed spa, singing bowl experiences, and daily cultural programming at Fayun Place make it a genuine wellness destination — not just a spa hotel with Asian decor.
Amanfayun is a resort built within an actual traditional Chinese village — clay tile roofs, stone pathways, courtyard walls — where some of the 46 dwellings are over a century old. It sits on 14 hectares surrounded by tea fields and bamboo groves, with a pilgrimage circuit of ancient Buddhist temples essentially as a backyard. Six kilometres from West Lake UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's about as removed from urban China as you can get without leaving Hangzhou.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Hands-on calligraphy instruction available as part of the daily Fayun Place cultural programming.
Daily from 3pm to 5pm, the two-storey Fayun Place (the oldest structure in the village, dating to the 1800s) hosts cultural programming: Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, tea tasting, local music performances, and talks on Buddhism and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Complimentary snacks throughout. This is included for all guests and runs daily.
Guided excursion to the Silk Museum and Southern Song Guan Kilns — one of the most popular off-property guided tours arranged by the hotel.
Learn the history of Longjing green tea, pluck leaves in an ancient tea village, and enjoy a Longjing bath for two. Available as part of the Celebrate the Season package or as a standalone experience.
Guided hike through bamboo forests and tea fields, crossing nine streams on steppingstones, to reach Longjing Village — home of Longjing (Dragon Well) green tea. In spring, guests can join local farmers harvesting and roasting tea.
300-metre peak home to Lingshun Temple, offering views all the way to West Lake. The route passes through the forested grottoes of Feilai Feng. Stone viewing decks at the temple make a good rest stop.
Private sessions with Master Lei Ming, offered in the dedicated studio or in outdoor natural settings. Part of the Aman Spa's wellness programming.
Complimentary for up to two guests, Tuesday through Saturday. Led by Xi Lei, a Nepal-certified singing bowl healer and meditation expert. Requires one day advance booking. Sessions take place in the dedicated Qiyun Space.
Walking access to Lingyin Temple (founded 326 AD), one of China's most important Buddhist temples, renowned for its pagodas, grottos, and rock carvings. Entry to the Lingyin and Feilaifeng scenic area is free of charge but requires advance real-name reservation via WeChat/Alipay mini-program. A pilgrimage circuit of seven ancient temples surrounds the property.
UNESCO World Heritage Site 6 km from the property. Options include guided boating, boating with afternoon tea, cycling the shore, or walking the causeway. The hotel arranges guided tours; West Lake is best visited early morning for tranquility.
