Amantaka
Colonial-meets-contemplative. White walls, antique tile floors, high wooden ceilings, four-poster beds, dark green shuttered windows, and a reflecting pool the whole place seems designed around. Refined without trying too hard. The vibe is slow, spiritual, and genuinely peaceful — not spa-catalogue peaceful, but monastery-adjacent peaceful.
The quieter, less-touristed Tak Bat alms procession happens directly in front of the resort — ask to join this one rather than the more crowded main street version
Why It Matters
The only Aman in Laos, and one of the few in the portfolio set inside an authentic historic building rather than purpose-built. Its 24-suite scale keeps things intimate. Every stay includes breakfast, a meal, afternoon tea, airport transfers with fast-track security, bicycles, tuk-tuk transport, and full hydrotherapy access — the all-inclusive structure is unusually generous for an Aman.
Amantaka is one of Aman's more interesting properties precisely because it didn't start from scratch. The resort occupies a genuine French colonial building in old-town Luang Prabang, sitting at the foot of sacred Mount Phousi, a short walk from the Mekong riverbank and the town's 30-plus gilded temples. The building gives the place historical weight that a ground-up Aman build rarely achieves, and the surrounding UNESCO World Heritage city does the rest — Buddhism isn't just a backdrop here, it's the actual rhythm of daily life.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Each morning at first light, monks and novices walk in silent procession through town accepting alms. Amantaka recommends — and facilitates — joining the quieter, less-touristed procession that passes directly in front of the resort, rather than the crowded main street version. One of the more genuinely moving things to do in Luang Prabang.
A traditional Lao chanting ceremony intended to reintegrate harmony into one's life. Can be arranged as part of wellness packages or on request.
A senior monk offers private daily sessions of up to 90 minutes. He gauges the guest's existing knowledge of Buddhism before discussing the five principals of good living. Introduced to bring the resort closer to the local monastic community.
Morning and evening classes run by Amantaka's chef, but they begin at the morning market, not the kitchen — guests pick produce before returning to cook on the resort's organic farm. Both the market immersion and the hands-on cooking are included.
A trip to the famous turquoise limestone waterfall pools outside town, with options for a picnic breakfast at the falls. Popular family and couples activity.
A short drive to Ban Saylom, guests are welcomed into a restored wooden house for tea, then learn the three distinct types of Lao weaving and try their hand at the loom. The session also includes dyeing a silk scarf and designing a batik piece.
A visit to a working rice paddy where guests can try ploughing with buffalo, planting seedlings, and harvesting. Can be combined with a candlelit intimate dinner set up in the paddy itself.
Amantaka's private wooden boats cruise the Mekong to Pak Ou Caves or upstream for riverside picnics. As the sun sets over the forested mountains, guests have cocktails and canapés on the water and watch the town's evening rituals from a boat. Cocktail-making on deck is part of the fun.
Guided tour of Luang Prabang's UNESCO-protected old town, covering key temples including Wat Xieng Thong and the Royal Palace Museum. Private tours can include meditation sessions at a nearby temple.
Private sessions with a professional coach available between 7 and 11am on request. The floodlit court is a short walk from the hotel; racquets, balls, and refreshments are provided.
Guided sitting and walking meditation sessions in the resort or in the town at dawn.
Hatha yoga in the Movement Studio overlooking the swimming pool. Sunrise movement classes available. Private sessions with a personal trainer can also be arranged.
