American Trade Hotel & Hall
Art Deco revival meets mid-century Latin colonial. Design-forward but grounded in local heritage. The kind of place where architects and creatives stay — polished but not fussy.
Danilo's only seats 50 people — book early and note it's open Wed-Sat only
Why It Matters
The building's story is hard to beat: 1917 construction as Panama's first reinforced concrete 'skyscraper,' decades of decline and abandonment, then a meticulous restoration into an SLH-member boutique hotel. Danilo's Jazz Club has become a genuine Casco Viejo institution beloved by locals, not just hotel guests.
A restored 1917 building right on Plaza Herrera in Panama City's UNESCO-listed Casco Viejo, the American Trade Hotel spent decades abandoned — at one point it was notoriously known as a local crack house — before Conservatorio bought it in 2007 and turned it into what is now one of the most celebrated boutique hotels in Central America. The bones are Art Deco: pale yellow walls, dark reclaimed Panamanian wood furniture, vintage tiles, creaking floors that add character rather than irritation. All 50 rooms come with Frette linens and Aesop toiletries. The rooftop pool looks out over the bay. But the real local institution here is The Club (still widely called Danilo's Jazz Club) — an intimate 50-seat live music bar that fills up fast Wednesday through Saturday.

A proper hotel library and reading room — one of the more appealing spaces in the building, with a quiet courtyard adjacent.
Two nightly sets of live jazz from local and international artists in a 50-seat intimate club. Open Wednesday through Saturday. The best nightlife option in Casco Viejo that doesn't require leaving the building.
Small outdoor rooftop pool with views over Casco Viejo and Panama Bay. Good for a midday dip and sundeck time — just don't expect a massive resort pool.
The Sunday brunch is a proper Casco Viejo event — elegantly set, communal atmosphere, full menu. Popular with hotel guests and locals alike. Reservations recommended.
Yoga classes offered at the hotel gym. Contact the hotel for current schedule and availability.
