Angelats Hotel
Victorian manor house meets Catalan mountain retreat. Historic, character-filled, and unapologetically analog. The whole place feels like someone's well-appointed country home rather than a hotel. Eco-conscious without being preachy about it.
Rooms have no WiFi by design — the hotel deliberately keeps rooms signal-free for a full digital detox. WiFi is available in common areas if you need it.
Why It Matters
One of very few Victorian-style buildings in Spain, built by the industrialist Batlló family (of Casa Batlló fame in Barcelona) as their private Pyrenean summer estate. The property has been in continuous use for over 130 years and converted to a hotel by the 4th generation of the family. The restaurant is housed in a never-consecrated private family chapel. The outdoor pool sits on top of one of the building's arched structures with panoramic Pyrenees views.
A Victorian manor in the Catalan Pyrenees, built as a summer retreat by the Batlló family in the 1890s — yes, the same Barcelona dynasty behind Casa Batlló. The architecture is genuinely English Victorian: high ceilings, arched windows, double glazing against the mountain cold, and a steam heating system still in use today. It sits inside its own ancient private forest, with trails leading to a waterfall and a thousand-year-old oak. Twenty rooms, each one different. The restaurant lives inside the old family church. No WiFi in the rooms — by design.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The departure station for the famous rack railway up to Vall de Nuria — one of the most dramatic mountain valleys in Catalonia — is just 4–5 minutes' drive from the hotel. Year-round activities in the valley: hiking, boating on the lake, skiing in winter, sanctuary visit.
Guided eco-tours through the natural surroundings. Specific details available from the hotel reception.
The hotel hosts weddings, company events, and private gatherings using two main spaces: the La Santa Restaurant terrace and the El Mirador salon. The culinary team handles catering.
On-site game room with snooker table and a library. Good for rainy mountain days.
On-site hiking trails on the estate, plus access to extensive Pyrenean routes from the property. Bike use available. The Parque Natural de les Capçaleres del Ter i del Freser is minutes away.
The estate has its own ancient forest with well-marked paths. Key stops include La Cascada (the waterfall), a genuinely beautiful and easily-missed spot, and the Roure Mil·lenari — a monumental oak tree over a thousand years old. The walks range from gentle strolls to more contemplative circuits.
The pool sits on top of one of the building's original arched structures, which gives it an elevated position with panoramic views of the Pyrenees. Sun loungers and beach umbrellas provided. Access may carry an extra charge — confirm on-site.
The remote mountain location and lack of light pollution makes Angelats a notably good stargazing spot. No organized program — just step outside.
