Apokryfo Traditional Guesthouse
Rustic-luxe. Stone walls, vaulted ceilings, four-poster beds, Cypriot rugs, open fireplaces — all designed by an actual architect, so nothing feels accidental. Intimate and slow-paced. Feels more like staying in a friend's beautifully restored village house than checking into a hotel.
Book a standalone house rather than a main building room if you're staying 3+ nights — the extra space, private courtyard, and full kitchen are worth it
Why It Matters
Award-winning architect-driven restoration of a whole cluster of listed stone houses in one of Cyprus's prettiest wine villages. BIG SEE Tourism Design Award 2020 winner. Silver prize at the Cyprus Tourism Awards 2019. Repeatedly featured by Condé Nast Traveller. The restaurant (Agrino) is genuinely good — guests who skip it for village tavernas are repeatedly warned by other reviewers that they're missing the best food on-site.
Cypriot architect Vakis Hadjikyriacou and his British interior designer wife Diana bought four crumbling stone houses in Lofou village in 2008 and spent years rebuilding them with local craftsmen and traditional materials. The result is a cluster of 5 rooms/suites in the main guesthouse plus 6 standalone houses, grouped around a small turquoise pool with a three-tiered garden. It sits at 800m altitude in the Troodos foothills — cooler than the coast even in peak summer, and genuinely quiet.

The hotel can arrange tasteful picnic lunches at the freshwater river below the village, reachable on the nature trail.
A 19th-century stone-built underground sterna (originally a rain water cistern) 5 metres below ground, with a constant year-round temperature. Specialises in local and regional Cypriot wines. Tastings can be arranged for groups of up to 30 people. The hotel's own Apokryfo house wine is produced in collaboration with Vlassides Winery nearby.
Vlassides Winery (co-producer of the Apokryfo house wine) is about 10 minutes away in Koilani. Ayia Mavri Winery is 5 minutes away in Koilani. The broader Krasochoria wine region encompasses 20 villages across the Troodos southern slopes.
