Why It Matters

One of the most thoughtfully preserved historic small hotels in Central Europe. Featured in The New York Times, Forbes, National Geographic, and The Times. The building has housed cobblers, masons, a winemaker, a stonecutter, a painter, a potter, a woolmaker, and a sockmaker since 1550 — and the hotel leans into every layer of that story. The hallways double as a rotating gallery for Slovenian art.

A family-owned, eight-room boutique hotel inside a building that has stood since 1550. The renovation — done by Ljubljana firm P PLUS Arhitekti — preserved original stone walls, a 16th-century wooden ceiling, a fresco in the dining room, and exposed brick, then layered in bespoke furniture made by local craftsmen, restored mid-century armchairs, and handmade tableware by Slovenian potter Barbara Skubic. Rooms are furnished in solid wood, linen, and wool on oak floors with underfloor heating — and notably, there are no TVs. The whole property is allergy-free and runs on a hyper-local sourcing philosophy from food to toiletries to art.

Where You'll Stay

8 room types available

Arch
Double Room

Arch

The only ground-floor room, and the one that blurs the line between inside and outside. Direct exit to the shaded communal courtyard makes it ideal for people who want fresh air at all hours. At 20 m2 it's the most compact double, but the historic stone archways give it real character.

Direct access to shared courtyardOnly ground-floor roomHypoallergenic bedWalk-in rain shower
Balcony
Superior Double / Triple

Balcony

The room with its own private balcony and large glass windows — genuinely light-filled in a building that otherwise leans toward the intimately dim. Courtyard views, a sofa bed for a third guest, and at 33 m2 enough space to actually spread out.

Beam
Double Room

Beam

Named for the massive original wooden beam — now reinforced with metal — that runs across the room. It's the building's Baroque working-class history made tangible. Street views, 27 m2, and can be connected with the adjacent Red Roof room for families.

Loft
Double Room

Loft

High ceilings, exposed beams, soft afternoon light, and views of St. Jacob's Church and the Castle Hill slopes. At 27 m2 it's not the biggest, but the vertical space and the church-and-hillside panorama make it feel far more expansive.

Rectangle
Superior Double / Triple

Rectangle

A generous 33 m2 room with a cozy sofa, natural textiles, and an unusual ceiling-mounted rectangular clothing rail that doubles as a design statement. Church views, a sofa bed for a third guest, and one of the more quietly luxurious options in the hotel.

Red Roof
Single / Connecting Room

Red Roof

The smallest room at 13 m2 — a deliberate nod to the ascetic craftsmen who lived here centuries ago. Works well as a solo retreat or as an add-on to the Beam room for families. The bathroom is detached but private, accessed by a private hallway.

Rose Street
Double Room

Rose Street

A spacious room overlooking the quiet cobblestone street and St. Jacob's Church. The original 16th-century wooden ceiling has been carefully preserved and restored — it's a genuine piece of architectural history overhead. At 29 m2, one of the more comfortable mid-size options.

Treetop Studio
Studio / Apartment

Treetop Studio

The standout of the hotel. A sleek top-floor 50 m2 studio with its own private roof terrace and a full kitchen. Two separate bedrooms — a master with a 180x210 bed and a smaller room with a 140x200 bed — make this the clear choice for families or anyone staying more than a few nights. The terrace and kitchen genuinely set it apart from everything else on offer.
