Atami Izus
Modern luxury ryokan. Clean lines, restrained Japanese aesthetics, natural stone and glass exterior that reads understated from the outside and then delivers big ocean views inside. The vibe is deliberately unhurried — structured around the concept of 'AWAI' (the Japanese idea of meaningful in-between moments). Not a party spot, not a honeymoon cliché. Just a very well-executed place to do nothing particularly fast.
Book the KARAKU Suite if you want the full top-floor terrace experience with a private reflecting pool — there are only two of them.
Why It Matters
The inverted floor plan alone makes it worth knowing about — putting reception, the lounge, the reflecting pool, and the footbath all on the top floor rather than the ground level is a genuine architectural statement. Add 1 Michelin Key recognition, calcium-sulfate hot springs that supposedly do wonders for skin, a single-plank hinoki cypress sushi counter, and Sagami Bay views from every room, and the case is strong.
Atami Izusan Karaku flips the script on ryokan convention: reception sits on the eighth and top floor, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame Sagami Bay and a reflecting pool mirrors the sky above. Every one of the 57 rooms comes with its own private open-air hot spring bath on the balcony, and the public infinity baths on the seventh floor push that infinity-edge drama even further. Opened December 2023, it earned a 1 Michelin Key in both 2024 and 2025, and operates strictly adults-only.

How you'll actually spend your days.
An outdoor footbath right next to the 8th-floor reflecting pool, overlooking Sagami Bay. Complimentary. Open sky, distant water, your feet in warm spring water.
Every room has a private outdoor hot spring bath on its balcony. The waters are calcium/sodium-chloride/sulfate springs from the Izusan area — the sulfate component is particularly noted for silky skin effects. Soak at any hour with Sagami Bay in front of you.
Two large communal baths on the 7th floor. Soukai (men's) includes an open-air bath, indoor bath, cold-water bath, smoke sauna, and dry sauna — baths are 900mm deep. Atami (women's) swaps the dry sauna for a steam sauna and has full-glass indoor walls. Both open-air baths have infinity edges extending toward the bay.
Fitness room on the 7th floor adjacent to the large communal baths. Cardio and strength machines available for guests who want to work up a sweat before their next soak.
The Izusan Onsen Summer Seaside Fireworks Festival takes place just below the property in late July and early August. The hotel's elevated hillside position makes it an excellent vantage point. Two dates annually (approx. July 24 and August 3 in 2026).
