Badia di Pomaio
Monastic modernism — raw natural materials, artisan-crafted stone and iron furniture, Italian parquet floors, and plenty of deliberate silence. No flashy spa, no gym with rows of treadmills. The vibe is calm, considered, and quietly confident.
Ask sommelier Mario for a private tasting in the wine cellar — it's one of the best things you can do here
Why It Matters
One of the more convincing conversions of a sacred building into a hotel in Tuscany. Ilaria Miani's restraint is the real achievement: the design doesn't fight the monastery, it listens to it. The 0-km food philosophy is genuinely lived — vegetables from the terraced gardens, honey from on-site beehives, olive oil from hundreds of trees on the estate. The restaurant, Campo Badia, draws non-guests up the hill just for the food.
A 17th-century Vallombrosian monastery founded in 1645, converted into a 13-room boutique hotel after a two-year renovation that finished in summer 2019. Designed by Italian architect Ilaria Miani, it sits at 650 metres above sea level, about 5km and 15 minutes by car from Arezzo. The bones of the original structure — exposed timber beams, arched ceilings, ancient brickwork — are all still there, living alongside sleek contemporary furniture and a heated infinity pool that frames the whole Arezzo valley.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Visit the hotel's on-site beehives in a clearing alongside a small river in the neighbouring forest. Guests can learn about honey production and even participate in the harvest.
Guided visit to the estate's extensive tiered kitchen garden, where the restaurant's produce is grown. Herbs, tomatoes, salad greens, and seasonal vegetables are all in the ground here.
Guided cycling tours through the cypress-lined country roads and woodland trails surrounding the property. The hotel is at 650m so routes are hilly — good for those who want proper exercise.
Guided and self-guided walking trails through the surrounding woodland and along the property's forested hillside. The hotel neighbours a fertile forest with plenty of marked routes.
Riding excursions through the Tuscan countryside, arranged through a nearby equestrian centre.
Mixology session using aromatic herbs and seasonal fruits from the estate garden. Guests learn to make their own balanced cocktails under guidance from the bar team.
Hands-on pasta and sauce making sessions with expert tuition. Includes a glass of wine during the class. Guests leave with skills and recipes to take home.
Private tastings in the impressively stocked underground wine cellar, led by on-site sommelier Mario. Focus on organic, biodynamic, and natural Tuscan wines — including wines from the estate itself.
Sunrise balloon flight over the Arezzo valley and Tuscan hills. Ends with a traditional breakfast and glass of prosecco on landing. One of the most memorable add-ons the hotel offers.
Privately guided excursions to Arezzo, Siena, Florence, Chianti wine country, and other Tuscan destinations, with hotel-arranged transfers.
On-site tennis court available to hotel guests.
Guided truffle hunt through the shaded woodland groves surrounding the property. A local truffle hunter leads the session with trained dogs.
Yoga sessions arranged for guests — likely outdoors given the setting. Contact hotel directly for scheduling.
