Why It Matters

Arguably the finest grounds-to-rooms ratio of any hotel in Europe. 614 private acres for just 21 rooms. A Regency mansion described in the 1820s as 'much beyond any place I have seen in Ireland.' Eight years and enormous sums went into its restoration, which honours the original materials, furniture, and atmosphere without resorting to pastiche.

A restored Regency mansion sitting on 614 walled acres in the heart of County Laois, about 1.5 hours from Dublin Airport. Opened in 2011 after eight years of meticulous restoration, Ballyfin holds 21 rooms in the main house plus a standalone Gardeners Cottage — and that's it. No conference wings, no spa village. Just an extraordinary neo-classical house filled with 17th-century Flemish tapestries, 18th-century Chinese wallpaper panels, marble baths, and four-poster beds, set against a 28-acre lake and ancient woodland. The restaurant holds a Michelin star; the hotel itself earned 3 Michelin Keys.
