Why It Matters
The only 5-star hotel in central Rennes with a full Nuxe Spa, a Michelin-recognised restaurant (La Table de Balthazar, 1 Assiette / 2 Fourchettes), and a separately housed annex of named apartment-suites (Maison Balthazar) inspired by Aboriginal art. It's in the MGallery Collection and sits comfortably alongside the best small luxury hotels in provincial France.
Opened in 2014, the Balthazar sits in two carefully restored 19th-century townhouses a few minutes' walk from the Parliament of Brittany and the Museum of Fine Arts. The look is urban and considered: white walls, slate-gray tones, vintage-style glass lamps, and boldly patterned metallic wallpaper. The centrepiece is a glass-enclosed indoor patio — plexiglass fountains, a floor-to-ceiling green living wall, oversized lanterns — that doubles as the hotel's social heartbeat.

The entry-level room and, honestly, a tight fit at 24 m². That said, every detail has been considered: signature wallpaper, designer decorative objects, full soundproofing, and a proper walk-in shower. No bathtub at this level. Works well for a couple who plan to be out most of the day.

Deluxe Room
Same footprint as the Superior but the bathroom gets a proper upgrade: both a walk-in shower and a bathtub. If a long soak after a day of sightseeing is your thing, this is the right call. The glass wall that separates bedroom from bathroom adds a refined, open feel.

Junior Suite
The standout feature is the 25 m² private landscaped terrace overlooking the city — a genuine rarity for a hotel in central Rennes. The suite itself has a separate lounge area divided from the bedroom by a signature metal-and-glass wall. Bathtub plus walk-in shower, a 47" TV, and enough space to actually spread out.

Seven apartment-suites ranging from 40 to 95 m², housed in two separate 19th-century buildings directly opposite the main hotel at 4–6 rue du Maréchal Joffre. Each suite is named after a famous Aboriginal artist and features original artworks. Configurations include 1-bedroom, large 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 1-bedroom attic. Full kitchen, living/dining room, washer/dryer included. Hotel services — breakfast delivery, gourmet dinner by the chef, driver excursions, spa access — are all available.
