Barnett Hill
Bold boutique country house — bold gem-hued prints, Michael Northcroft furniture and McNutt of Donegal fabrics set against the cool, restrained architecture of a Queen Anne mansion. Design-forward without feeling like a show home.
The Oak Hall Restaurant only does dinner on Fridays and Saturdays (6–8:30pm); Sunday lunch is the other big dining draw — book well in advance
Why It Matters
The history alone is worth telling at dinner: the original Thomas Cook family home, later loaned to the British Red Cross as a WWII convalescent hospital, now a thoroughly modernised 4-star hotel. The 2-AA Rosette Oak Hall Restaurant and the Utopia Treatment Rooms round out a package that punches above its price point for this part of Surrey.
A Grade II listed Queen Anne mansion built in 1905 by Frank Cook, grandson of pioneering travel agent Thomas Cook — and it looks the part. The Telegraph called it a 'gingerbread-brick palace', and they're not wrong. Set atop a hill in 26 acres of Surrey woodland, the property has been thoroughly reimagined by the Alexander Hotel Collection since their 2016 acquisition, pairing Edwardian bones with bold, gem-hued interiors and Michael Northcroft furnishings. It's under an hour from London but feels considerably further away.
