Bergen Børs Hotel
Historic grandeur meets Scandi minimalism. The bones are 19th-century neo-Renaissance; the rooms are tailored and understated, like a well-cut suit. Smart, polished, slightly formal but not stuffy.
Book the Junior Suite that was the stock exchange manager's office — it's one of the most atmospheric rooms in any Norwegian hotel
Why It Matters
The building's original stock exchange trading hall is now Frescohallen restaurant, with 100-year-old frescoes by Axel Revold intact overhead. One of the Junior Suites occupies the former stock exchange manager's office — complete with original architectural details. Swedish design studio Claesson Koivisto Rune (behind K5 in Tokyo and Nobis in Stockholm) handled the full interior conversion.
Bergen Børs Hotel occupies a monumental 1862 neo-Renaissance building that once housed Bergen's stock exchange — and it wears that history visibly. The main hall is dominated by soaring vaulted ceilings painted by Axel Revold in 1921–23, and the interiors were redesigned by Swedish firm Claesson Koivisto Rune in a clean Scandi minimalism: walnut wood, leather, marble, pinstripe wallpaper, grid-patterned carpets. Right on Vågsallmenningen, Bergen's central square, with the fish market literally outside the door. All 127 rooms include Nespresso machines, smart TVs, and minibars; suites get bathtubs. The attached Frescohallen restaurant — named the world's best in the 'historic buildings' category — is worth the stay alone.
