Bettei Senjuan
Contemporary Japanese luxury meets traditional craft. Zen calm, deeply site-specific, with artisan details in every corner — kumiko shoji screens, Niigata-carved sliding doors, washi paper art by Eriko Horiki. Quiet, private, and serious about onsen. No nightlife, no pool, no large groups.
The Room A type now includes a private in-room sauna — worth upgrading for sauna fans
Why It Matters
Relais & Châteaux member since 2012, 5-Star Ryokan (Platinum) by Japan's Tourism Economics News, Green Key eco-label holder, and World Luxury Hotel Awards nominee. Every one of the 18 rooms has its own free-flowing natural hot spring bath. The dining — kaiseki served in 16 individual private rooms — is a genuine highlight. Less than 1.5 hours from Tokyo by shinkansen, yet feels like another world.
A modern luxury ryokan that opened in 1997 on the banks of the Tanigawa River in Gunma Prefecture, sitting at the foot of Mount Tanigawa. The building spans 1,300 sqm and holds just 18 rooms — all with private outdoor hot spring baths sourced directly from the property's own spring. The architecture is the real talking point: an 8-meter-high curved glass corridor connects the rooms to the common areas, shifting from serene morning light to atmospheric evening glow. Walls use local Gunma clay (darker) and Kyoto earthen plaster, floors have stainless steel woven tatami, and the dining room ceiling features the Edo suminagashi ink-flow technique. This is a ryokan designed by people who thought hard about every surface.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Canyoning operators are accessible approximately 15 minutes by car from the property. The Minakami area is one of Japan's top spots for canyoning, white-water rafting, and river activities.
An open garden terrace offering seasonal local fruits and vegetables. Open 13:00-16:00. A low-key place to sit outside with a drink and watch the changing light on the mountain.
A small standalone room at the end of a garden path, completely surrounded by trees. A quiet retreat for reading or simply sitting with a view of the forest. Complimentary drinks available.
A short guided tour of the building's design and artworks — covering hidden details like the spirit character in the logo, the onsen-drilling pipe pillars in the dining room, the feng shui layout, the charcoal under the building, and the regional significance of the earthen walls. Staff lead this occasionally; ask at reception.
Mount Tanigawa is a serious hiking destination and one of Japan's 'Hundred Famous Peaks.' Staff help maintain the trails up the mountain. Access from the property is very close. The Tanigawa Ropeway provides easier access to higher elevations.
A 30-minute workshop run by SUMIKA (a local Minakami distillery and fragrance studio) every Tuesday. Guests choose from nature-derived scents and create a personal room spray to take home. The workshop runs twice on Tuesdays at 15:00 and 15:30.
Accessible via the ropeway. The 50-hectare resort runs from November to May and covers slopes for all levels. The property is effectively ski-in/ski-out adjacent.
A 10-minute aerial ropeway providing access to Mount Tanigawa's upper elevations, panoramic views, and in winter the Tenjindaira Ski Resort. About 30 minutes from the property by car.
