Bio-Hotel Stanglwirt
Alpine lodge meets serious wellness resort. Think warm pine walls, wool carpets, tiled stoves in the suites, and a spa that could give a dedicated retreat a run for its money. It's rooted, unfussy, and very Austrian — but with Lipizzaner horses in an indoor arena and a saltwater pool claimed to be the largest in any hotel in Europe, it's also quietly extraordinary.
Thursday evenings feature the 'Stanglwirt's Reception' — a standing meet-and-greet with the Hauser family and department heads at 6:30pm, worth attending for insight into the operation
Why It Matters
One of the oldest continuously operating hotels in Tyrol, and one of the most genuinely sustainable — the property runs on its own Kaiserquelle spring water for heating and power, maintains a working organic farm, and has been family-owned since 1722. It holds the distinction of having Europe's largest hotel saltwater pool (210 sq m) and Austria's first private Lipizzaner stud.
A 400-year-old family-run farm turned five-star wellness fortress in the foothills of the Wilder Kaiser. Built from native Arolla pine and powered by its own hydroelectric spring, Stanglwirt was doing sustainable hospitality long before sustainability became a marketing category. The Hauser family still runs it, the farm still produces the cheese and meat on your plate, and the spa complex — all 12,000 square metres of it — is the kind of place you genuinely forget to leave.
