Why It Matters
Michelin Guide-listed. The only place in the area sitting on land actually cultivated by Benedictine monks since 1444. The on-site Spagyric Laboratory still processes herbs from those same gardens into herbal teas, oils and cosmetics. The Re Tartù restaurant, helmed by Chef Andrea Funghi, is frequently cited as the reason alone to book a stay.
Built around 1444 as a Benedictine monastery just outside Assisi's city walls, Borgo Antichi Orti has been thoughtfully transformed into a 12-room boutique retreat. The star of the property is its Hortuli Benedetti: 10,000 square metres of organically cultivated gardens, divided into quadrants following medieval botanical symbolism of the four elements. Rooms have exposed beams, parquet floors, and all the essential comforts. The truffle-focused restaurant Re Tartù regularly earns high guest praise, and the wellness area runs massages using essential oils pressed from herbs grown right on the grounds.

Classic Suite
Located on the top floor of the main building. Double bed on the first level, living area on the upper level reached by wooden stairs — unusual and characterful layout. Ideal for families or anyone wanting a proper sitting room. Can add two extra beds on the upper floor.
Deluxe Room
Bright double rooms in the main building, first floor. Parquet floors and exposed beams. Spectacular views over the vegetable gardens, farmyard and garden. Larger than Superior rooms.
Garden Junior Suite
Located in the outdoor annexe of the property. Open-plan layout with double bed, living area, and bathroom with shower. Each unit has a private garden with a direct view of the Assisi Basilica. Can accommodate up to 4 people with extra beds. These are suites 11 and 12.
Junior Suite
Spacious suite with separate living and sleeping areas, combining elegance with all modern comforts. Historical and spiritual touches in the decor.
Panoramic Junior Suite
Junior Suite with notable panoramic views — the standout feature. Located to maximise the views of the Umbrian hills and, depending on aspect, the Basilica di San Francesco.
Standard Room
Split-level layout: living room with sofa and bathroom on the ground floor, double bed on the upper level accessed by stairs. Cosy and functional. Views over the mountains and park.
Superior Room
Located on the ground floor of the main building. More accessible than Deluxe rooms, which are on the first floor. All modern comforts, mountain and park views.

Guided exploration of the 10,000 sqm Hortuli Benedetti gardens, organised into thematic quadrants based on medieval botanical symbolism of the four elements. Cultivated entirely without chemicals, the gardens grow both food and medicinal herbs. Educational tours available.
Hands-on cocktail workshops at the Botanical Lab where guests learn to make drinks with botanicals from the Hortuli. Guided tastings also available to explore cocktail flavours and aromas.
On-site workshop where medicinal herbs from the Hortuli are processed through ancient spagyric extraction techniques into herbal teas, oils, candles, and cosmetics. Guests can observe and participate. Products are also used in the spa treatments and given as welcome amenities.
Scenic walking and running trails directly from the property through the surrounding Umbrian countryside, with the Basilica as a constant landmark. Trails range in length and are also suitable for cycling. About a 25-minute walk to central Assisi.
Outdoor yoga sessions held in the heart of the Hortuli gardens, guided by experienced teachers. All levels welcome, from beginners to advanced. Seasonal retreat programmes with themes tied to equinoxes and harvest cycles, designed by instructor Nadia Farahani.
