Why It Matters
One of very few hotels in Chianti that occupies a complete medieval hamlet rather than a single converted farmhouse. The Lombard-era wine room (dated 1061 AD) hosts estate wine tastings. A former Lombard-era fortification perched 600 metres above the Chianti valley, Borgo Vescine spent centuries as a working peasant hamlet before owner Lucia Paladin restored it into a 28-room relais. The rooms are spread across the original stone buildings of the hamlet — former grain stores, olive-pressing rooms, and winemakers' cellars — connected by cobbled paths and centred on a piazza that still hosts communal dinners every Friday. The 42-hectare estate wraps around vineyards, century-old olive groves, saffron fields, and dense woodland; Siena is 20km away and Florence about 42km.

The entry-level rooms, once used for drying lavender and aromatic herbs. At around 15 sqm they are genuinely intimate — more cosy than cramped, with handmade terracotta floors, traditional wooden accents, and restored original proportions.
