Boutique & Design Hotel Volkshaus Basel
Architectural boutique hotel with serious design pedigree. Monochromatic interiors, freestanding beds, bespoke H&dM furniture, and rotating contemporary art throughout. Understated rather than showy — quiet luxury with a cultural edge.
Book a courtyard-facing room if events are happening — the inner courtyard hosts weddings and corporate evenings that carry sound upward
Why It Matters
The only Swiss boutique hotel project by Herzog & de Meuron, the firm responsible for the Roche Towers in Basel, the Beijing National Stadium, and the Tate Modern. Holds a Michelin Key (2025) and is listed among Switzerland's 101 Best Hotels. The building itself has been central to Basel's public life for centuries.
Volkshaus Basel is a 45-room boutique hotel designed by Herzog & de Meuron, occupying a building with a layered history: once a castle, later a brewery, then a concert hall and office complex. The architects preserved the historic fabric while threading in custom-designed furniture, Belle Époque references, and contemporary art — the result is something genuinely singular in Switzerland. The hotel sits in the Kleinbasel district, a few minutes' walk from the Rhine and the Basel Trade Fair.
