Why It Matters

One of the founding restaurants of Italian haute cuisine — the first in southern Italy to hold 3 Michelin stars (1997). The organic farm Le Peracciole at Punta Campanella supplies the kitchen directly. A pre-Roman tunnel under the building holds more than 25,000 bottles across 1,300 wine labels. The Iaccarino family (founders Alfonso and Livia, sons Ernesto and Mario) still greet guests personally at every service.

Don Alfonso 1890 is a family-run, Relais & Châteaux property in the hilltop village of Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi on the Sorrentine Peninsula — about 20 minutes by car from Sorrento, halfway between the Bay of Naples and the Bay of Salerno. The whole place is built around a single obsession: the food. The Iaccarino family has been running this 19th-century villa since the 1970s, and the 1-Michelin-star restaurant (which held 3 stars at its peak in 1997) is still the reason most people make the trip. Eight rooms sit above the vaulted wine cellar, organic kitchen gardens, and one very good outdoor pool.
