Insider Tip
1/6

Book a Tier 1 (lowest level) cabin if visiting in winter or during wet weather — the upper-tier hides require a steep climb that becomes less fun in driving Scottish rain.

Why It Matters

One of the only dedicated wilderness cabin resorts on the Isle of Skye. Built on the site of the old Portree Golf Course with £8m+ investment over six years. Combines Nordic wellness (Estonian saunas, cold plunge pool) with a serious modern Scottish restaurant and an extensive whisky bar — a rare combination this far north.

Bracken Hide sits on 52 acres of the old Portree Golf Course, a four-star wilderness resort made up of 45 peaked timber cabins — called Hides — scattered across a hillside above Portree Bay. The main hub building is the centrepiece: floor-to-ceiling windows framing Loch Portree and the Sound of Raasay, a modern Scottish restaurant, an intimate whisky bar, Estonian saunas, a wild plunge pool, and a mezzanine screening lounge. It's a genuinely ambitious concept for the Inner Hebrides, and the views alone justify the trip.

The Hide (Standard Cabin)

From GBP140 / night

All 45 Hides are individual peaked timber cabins scattered across the hillside. Inside they're snug but well-designed: Harris tweed headboards, burnt wood panelling, high-quality bedding, underfloor heating, and air conditioning. Each has a small but smart en-suite with shower and Scottish Fine Soaps toiletries, a tea station with kettle, coffee and shortbread, two wardrobes, flat-screen TV with streaming (Netflix), a safe, and a furnished outdoor deck. The bathrooms are compact — the door catching the sink is a noted quirk — but the views from the deck more than compensate.

Tier 1 Hide (Most Accessible Cabin)

From GBP140 / night

The lowest-level cabins on the hillside. Same specification as all other Hides but no steep climb from the car park. The property explicitly recommends these for guests with mobility concerns or health issues, and they're also the smart choice when Skye's weather turns. Still benefit from views over Loch Portree.

Upper Tier Hide

Upper Tier Hide

From GBP160 / night

The higher-tier cabins sit further up the hillside, offering greater seclusion and elevated views. The tradeoff is a steeper walk from the hub and car park — fine in good conditions, less ideal when the weather closes in. The lack of light pollution at this elevation makes them excellent for stargazing on clear nights.

On Property

How you'll actually spend your days.

Wellness
Estonian Sauna & Cold Plunge

Two Estonian saunas and a wild outdoor plunge pool with views across Portree Bay to the Sound of Raasay. Sessions are bookable and particularly popular after hiking days. The plunge pool is unheated — cold even in summer.

Entertainment
Mezzanine Screening LoungeComplimentary

A mezzanine-level lounge inside the hub building with a large-screen TV and lay-flat seating. Designed for movie nights and family (or group) downtime. Cosy seating, warm colours, and a relaxed vibe.

Nature
Stargazing from the HillsideComplimentary

The hillside site has minimal light pollution — on clear nights, the star visibility is exceptional. Upper-tier cabins particularly benefit from this, though the paths are unlit so a torch is essential.

Walking
Walking to Portree TownComplimentary

The property is about a 20-minute walk downhill into Portree town centre, giving access to all the restaurants, pubs, shops and harbour without needing a car. The return walk is uphill — worth keeping in mind after dinner.
