Why It Matters
The only hotel in Florence built within the Torre della Pagliazza — the city's oldest surviving circular tower, dating to 541 AD. It holds a 2-Michelin-star restaurant (Santa Elisabetta, Chef Rocco De Santis) with only seven tables inside the tower's first floor. Mentioned by name in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code. Recognized by Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, Forbes Travel Guide, and awarded 1 Michelin Key in 2025.
The Brunelleschi sits on a quiet piazza about 190 meters from the Duomo — close enough that the cathedral dome fills your window, far enough that you're not fighting tour-group foot traffic. The building itself is genuinely old: it grew out of a 6th-century Byzantine tower (the Torre della Pagliazza, built 541–544 AD) and a medieval church, and a small on-site museum in the basement shows off Roman ruins discovered during construction. Inside that same tower sits a 2-Michelin-star restaurant with just seven tables. The renovation has caught up with the history, and rooms are now modern and well-soundproofed — though the entry-level Classic Executive at 18 sqm is compact.
