Why It Matters
One Michelin Key. Horn restaurant holds 2 AA Rosettes and is in the SquareMeal UK Top 100. Wild has also made the UK Top 100 and is listed in the Michelin Guide. The art collection is genuinely museum-quality. And the wine cellar with Idris Elba's poker table is not a normal hotel feature.
From the outside, BULL looks like your typical Cotswolds coaching inn: golden stone, wonky floors, 16th-century bones. Inside, it's anything but. PR legend Matthew Freud spent five years turning this Grade II*-listed former inn (open since 1536) into something genuinely strange and wonderful — corridors hung with Banksys, Dalís, Francis Bacons and Damien Hirsts, no televisions (chess sets instead), a pantry stocked with mezcal negronis, and a wine cellar hidden behind a French prison door that contains Idris Elba's poker table. Three critically acclaimed restaurants, two bars, a dedicated spa suite and a programme of activities from Japanese pottery to beekeeping make this feel less like a hotel and more like a very glamorous, art-filled country house where someone has let in the public.
