Burg Schwarzenstein
Romantic castle-hotel meets contemporary elegance. The historic building has cherry-wood four-posters and exposed medieval stonework; the adjacent Park Residence goes full modern with dark wenge wood, silk fabrics, and floor-to-ceiling windows. A rare combination that actually works.

Why It Matters
Member of Relais & Châteaux since 2007 and holder of a Michelin Key designation. The castle's history runs through the Mumm champagne family, the Oetker food dynasty, and a string of Michelin-starred kitchens — including a brief two-star chapter. It is one of the most iconic wine-country retreats in Germany's most respected Riesling region.
Burg Schwarzenstein looks like a medieval fortress — crenellated tower, stone walls, the whole visual package — but it was actually built in 1876 by the Mumm von Schwarzenstein wine family as a romantic summer residence. Today it operates as a Relais & Châteaux property set in parkland above the Rheingau vineyards, with long Rhine Valley views stretching from Wiesbaden to Rüdesheim. The setting does the heavy lifting: 212 metres above the valley floor, surrounded by vines, with a glass-pavilion brasserie that makes the most of it.

How you'll actually spend your days.
On-site barbecue area available for private events and group bookings.
The hotel hosts a regular culinary calendar throughout the year — special menus tied to the seasons (asparagus in spring, harvest in autumn) and occasional wine dinners featuring Rheingau producers. Check the culinary calendar before booking.
Electric bike rides through the vineyard landscape and along the Rhine are available in the area. The hotel can assist with arrangements via its partner network.
The Rheinsteig long-distance trail passes directly through the hotel's surroundings. The hotel provides recommended stage routes: Stage 3 (Kiedrich–Johannisberg) and Stage 4 (Johannisberg–Rüdesheim). The Rheingauer Klostersteig (monastery trail) is another nearby option. Terrain is vineyard hillside — gentle to moderate inclines with rewarding Rhine views.
Easy walking routes and circular trails wind directly from the castle grounds through the Rheingau vineyards. Schloss Johannisberg — the world's first designated Riesling estate — is a short walk away. The village of Johannisberg itself, with its half-timbered houses and wine estates, is on the approach road.
