Why It Matters
One of the original luxury retreats on the Maremma coast, with roots going back to 1974 and a genuine celebrity pedigree (Carlo Ponti and Sophia Loren). Punta Ala itself is a playground for Italian elites — the marina hosts the Luna Rossa regatta team, and the town has almost no commercial tourism strip, just private villas and yachts.
Cala del Porto opened in 1974 on a privileged perch above the Punta Ala marina — and film producer Carlo Ponti helped shape it from the start, with Sophia Loren as its original face. It's a 5-star seasonal resort (open May through September) with 37 rooms and suites decorated in traditional Tuscan style, most with private balconies that look straight out over the Tyrrhenian Sea and marina. On a clear day you can pick out Elba, Capraia, and even the faint outline of Corsica. The Belvedere Restaurant and a pool terrace handle all the eating and drinking without ever making you leave for the mainland.
